Accessibility
We care for children whose access to the world is already harder than it should be. The least we can do is build a website their families can actually use.
Last updated: July 2026
Many of the people who come to this site are managing a disability, their own or their child’s, or are reading it exhausted at two in the morning. Accessibility is not a compliance exercise for us. It is the same job as the rest of our work: remove the obstacle so the family can get on with it.
Our commitment
We want every part of this website to be usable by everyone, regardless of ability, assistive technology or device. Where we fall short, we want to hear about it and fix it — not defend it.
The standard we build to
We target the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. That is the benchmark most widely referenced in the United States, including in the context of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 508.
We aim to conform to it. We are not claiming a certified, independently audited conformance, because that would not be true. We test as we build, we fix what we find, and we say plainly below where we know we are weaker.
What we have done
- Every interactive control — links, buttons, the menu, the FAQ, every form field — can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone, in a logical order.
- Focus is always visible. If you are tabbing, you can see where you are.
- A "Skip to main content" link is the first thing in the tab order, so keyboard and screen reader users can jump past the navigation.
- The site respects your system’s reduced-motion setting. Turn motion down and the reveals, parallax and counters stop animating.
- Semantic markup throughout: real headings in order, real lists, real buttons and links, landmarks for header, navigation, main and footer.
- Menus and the FAQ accordion announce their state to assistive technology, and close on Escape.
- Every meaningful image has alt text that describes what is actually in the photo. Decorative images are marked so screen readers skip them.
- Text and interface colours are chosen to meet WCAG AA contrast against their backgrounds.
- Form fields have real labels tied to their inputs, hints are readable rather than placeholder-only, and status messages are announced when they appear.
- The layout reflows to any width and stays usable when text is enlarged up to 200 percent.
Where we know we fall short
Stated honestly, because a page that claims to be perfectly accessible is usually a page nobody tested.
- Our audit is internal. We test with keyboard, screen readers and automated checks, but we have not commissioned an independent third-party WCAG audit.
- The embedded Google Map on our Contact page comes from Google, and we do not control its accessibility. Our full address and phone number are always available as text next to it, so nothing on that page depends on the map.
- The county marquee on our home page scrolls continuously. It is decorative, and the same counties appear as text elsewhere on the site — but it does not currently stop on hover.
- Some photographs carry text overlays as part of the design. Where that happens, the same information appears as real text nearby.
- We are a small team. Pages get added and edited often, and a new page can briefly fall short of the standard the rest of the site meets. That is exactly what we would like you to tell us about.
Tell us about a barrier
If any part of this site is difficult or impossible for you to use, contact us and tell us what happened. It helps if you can say which page you were on, what you were trying to do, and what device or assistive technology you were using — but send it however is easiest for you. A partial report is far better than none.
We will acknowledge you within one business day. We will tell you what we can fix and when, and if we cannot fix something quickly, we will find another way to get you what you needed.
